(Pulmonary Circulation)
(Systemic Circulation)
(Heart) by RAS A2Z
(Right Atrium)
(Left Atrium)
(Right Ventricle)
(Left Ventricle)

(Epicardium)
(Myocardium)
(Endocardium)
(Pericardium) by RAS A2Z
(Heart Valves) by RAS A2Z

(Double Circulation) by RAS A2Z
(Pulmonary Circulation) by RAS A2Z

Pulmonary artery → Deoxygenated blood
Pulmonary vein → Oxygenated blood
(Systemic Circulation) by RAS A2Z

Human circulation is further divided into two main circuits—
1. Pulmonary Circulation
2. Systemic Circulation
In humans, both circuits form Double Circulation.
4 Heart by RAS A2Z
The heart is a muscular pump that circulates blood throughout the body.
It is located in the thoracic cavity between the two lungs and is slightly tilted to the left.
The heart of an adult human is about the size of a fist.
5 Structure of the Heart by RAS A2Z
The human heart has four chambers—
Upper Chambers
- Right Atrium
- Left Atrium
Lower Chambers
- Right Ventricle
- Left Ventricle
6 Functions of the Four Chambers by RAS A2Z
Right Atrium
Receives oxygen-poor blood coming from the body.
Main sources—
- Superior Vena Cava
- Inferior Vena Cava
Right Ventricle
Sends blood to the lungs through the Pulmonary Artery.
Left Atrium
Receives oxygen-rich blood coming from the lungs.
Left Ventricle
Pumps oxygen-rich blood to the whole body through the Aorta.
7 Wall of the Heart by RAS A2Z
The wall of the heart has three main layers—
- Epicardium
- Myocardium
- Endocardium
Myocardium
It is the main muscular layer of the heart and pumps blood by contraction.
The main basis of the heart's pumping power = Myocardium
8 Pericardium by RAS A2Z
The double membrane-like structure around the heart is called the Pericardium.
The fluid between them— Pericardial Fluid—helps in reducing friction.
9 Heart Valves by RAS A2Z
Valves allow blood to flow in one direction and prevent it from flowing back.
Four Major Valves
1. Tricuspid Valve
Right Atrium → Right Ventricle
2. Pulmonary Semilunar Valve
Right Ventricle → Pulmonary Artery
3. Bicuspid/Mitral Valve
Left Atrium → Left Ventricle
4. Aortic Semilunar Valve

11 Double Circulation of the Heart by RAS A2Z
In humans, in one complete circulatory cycle, blood passes through the heart twice.
Pulmonary Circulation
Systemic Circulation
Because of this system, effective separation of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood is maintained.
12 Pulmonary Circulation by RAS A2Z
The right ventricle sends oxygen-poor blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery.
In the lungs—
After this, oxygen-rich blood reaches the left atrium through the pulmonary veins.
Pulmonary artery → Deoxygenated blood
Pulmonary vein → Oxygenated blood
13 Systemic Circulation by RAS A2Z
The left ventricle sends oxygen-rich blood to the whole body through the aorta.
In the tissues—
- O₂ and nutrients reach.
- CO₂ and waste products enter the blood.
Then oxygen-poor blood returns to the right atrium through the veins.
14 Artery by RAS A2Z
An artery is a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
Characteristics
- Thick wall.
- Muscular and elastic.
- Relatively higher blood pressure.
- Generally O₂-rich blood.
Pulmonary artery carries O₂-poor blood.
Therefore, arteries are identified not by the oxygenation of blood, but by the direction of blood flow from the heart.
15 Vein by RAS A2Z
A vein carries blood toward the heart.
Characteristics
- Relatively thin wall.
- Low blood pressure.
- Many veins have valves.
- Generally O₂-poor blood.
Pulmonary veins carry O₂-rich blood.
16 Capillaries by RAS A2Z
Capillaries are extremely small blood vessels.
Their wall is about one cell thick.
This is the site where between blood and tissues—
- O₂
- CO₂
- Nutrients
- Waste
- Water
exchange takes place.
17 Comparison of Blood Vessels by RAS A2Z
| Basis | Artery | Vein | Capillary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direction | Away from heart | Toward heart | Between arteriole-venule |
| Wall | Thick | Thin | One cell thick |
| Pressure | High | Low | Low |
| Valves | Generally none | Many have them | None |
| Main function | Blood distribution | Blood return | Exchange of substances |
18 Blood by RAS A2Z
Blood is a fluid connective tissue.
It has two main parts—
1. Plasma
About 55% of blood.
2. Formed Elements
About 45%—

- Are biconcave.
- Contain hemoglobin.
- Mainly transport O₂.
They are mainly formed in the Red Bone Marrow.
21 Haemoglobin by RAS A2Z
Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein.
Its main functions—
- Transport of O₂.
- Some contribution to CO₂ transport.
- Contribution to the acid-base balance of blood.
The red color of hemoglobin is mainly due to the iron (Fe) present in its heme part.
22 Erythropoietin (EPO) by RAS A2Z
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hormone that promotes the formation of red blood cells.
Its main source in adults is the Kidneys.
When oxygen availability in tissues is low, EPO production can increase.

WBC is also called Leukocyte.
Their main function is the body's immune defense.
Major Types—
Granulocytes
- Neutrophil
- Eosinophil
- Basophil
Agranulocytes
- Lymphocyte
- Monocyte
24 Platelets by RAS A2Z
Platelets are also called Thrombocytes.
Their main function—
To help prevent bleeding (Haemostasis).
When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets gather there and contribute to forming an initial plug.
25 Blood Clotting by RAS A2Z
In the process of stopping bleeding—
The mesh of Fibrin traps blood cells and forms a clot.
Vitamin K is essential for the formation of certain blood-clotting factors.
26 Blood Groups by RAS A2Z
The most important blood group systems in humans are—
- ABO Blood Group System
- Rh Blood Group System
27 ABO Blood Group System by RAS A2Z
The ABO system is based on A and B antigens present on the surface of RBC.
| Blood Group | RBC Antigen | Plasma Antibody |
|---|---|---|
| A | A | Anti-B |
| B | B | Anti-A |
| AB | A + B | Generally no Anti-A/B |
| O | No A/B | Anti-A + Anti-B |
AB = Universal Recipient — in the general ABO context.
O = Universal Donor — generally in the context of ABO RBC transfusion.
But in actual blood transfusion, ABO + Rh and cross-matching are necessary.
28 Rh Blood Group by RAS A2Z
The most important Rh antigen—
If D antigen is present—
Rh Positive (+)
If absent—
Rh Negative (-)
29 Rh Incompatibility and Pregnancy by RAS A2Z
If Rh-positive fetal blood cells reach the body of an Rh-negative mother, there is a possibility of anti-D antibodies forming in the mother.
In the next Rh-positive pregnancy, these antibodies can affect the fetal RBC.
Anti-D Immunoglobulin is used to prevent this condition.
30 Electrical Activity of the Heart by RAS A2Z
There is a special electrical conduction system for the heartbeat.
Main Structures—
- SA Node (Sinoatrial Node)
- AV Node (Atrioventricular Node)
- Bundle of His
- Purkinje Fibres
31 SA Node — Natural Pacemaker by RAS A2Z
The SA Node is located in the right atrium.
It spontaneously generates electrical impulses and, under normal conditions, determines the rhythm of the heart.
Therefore, it is called—
Natural Pacemaker

40 Measurement of Blood Pressure by RAS A2Z
To measure blood pressure—
Sphygmomanometer
is used.
Example:
Here—
- 120 = Systolic
- 80 = Diastolic
This is a general reference value; a person's actual healthy blood pressure depends on age, condition, and clinical context.
41 Pulse by RAS A2Z
The pressure wave produced in an artery by each heartbeat is called the Pulse.
It is generally felt at the Radial Artery of the wrist.
Pulse rate is generally equal to heart rate, but under some conditions, the two can differ.
42 ECG — Electrocardiography by RAS A2Z
ECG (Electrocardiogram) is a recording of the electrical activity of the heart.
Its main wave components—
P Wave
Depolarization of the atria.
QRS Complex
Depolarization of the ventricles.
T Wave
Repolarization of the ventricles.
ECG does not directly record the mechanical contraction of the heart; it is a recording of electrical activity.
43 Control of Circulation by RAS A2Z
In controlling blood pressure and blood flow—
- Autonomic Nervous System
- Hormones
- Smooth muscles of blood vessels
- Kidneys
- Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System
play important roles.
44 Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) by RAS A2Z
When blood pressure or blood flow to the kidneys decreases, Renin is released from the kidneys.
Sequence—
Angiotensin II—
- Causes constriction of blood vessels.
- Increases secretion of Aldosterone.
As a result, it helps in raising blood pressure.
