RAS A2Z Science — Human Reproduction |

(Asexual Reproduction)

(Sexual Reproduction)

(Asexual Reproduction) by RAS A2Z

(Binary Fission)

(Amoeba)

(Multiple Fission)

(Budding)

(Hydra)

(Fragmentation)

(Spirogyra)

(Regeneration)

(Planaria)

(Spore Formation)

(Rhizopus)

(Vegetative Propagation)

(Ovulation)

Chapter 9 — Biology

Human Reproduction

RAS A2Z Science — Reproductive System, Gametogenesis, Menstrual Cycle, Pregnancy |

1.1 Definition of Reproduction by RAS A2Z

Reproduction is the biological process by which organisms produce new offspring similar to themselves. It is not essential for the survival of an individual organism, but it is necessary for the continuity of the species and for the transfer of genetic information from one generation to the next.

1.2 Biological Importance of Reproduction by RAS A2Z

1.3 Major Types of Reproduction by RAS A2Z

Asexual Reproduction

New offspring arise from a single parent, generally without the fusion of gametes.

Sexual Reproduction

New offspring are formed by the participation and fusion of male and female gametes.

2 Asexual Reproduction by RAS A2Z

In this, generally only one parent is involved. There is no fusion of gametes and the offspring is usually genetically identical to the parent. Such offspring is generally called a clone.

2.1 Binary Fission

One cell divides into two nearly equal daughter cells.

Example: Amoeba

2.2 Multiple Fission

One cell divides simultaneously into many daughter cells.

2.3 Budding

A small outgrowth-like structure called a bud develops on the parent body. It can develop and separate.

Examples: Yeast, Hydra

2.4 Fragmentation

The body of some organisms breaks into separate fragments, and each fragment can form a new organism.

Example: Spirogyra

2.5 Regeneration

The regrowth of a cut or damaged part of an organism's body is called regeneration.

Example: Planaria

⚠️ Important Difference

Not every regeneration is considered reproduction. In an organism, merely rebuilding a lost organ is not reproduction; when a new independent organism is formed, it can contribute to reproduction.

2.6 Spore Formation

In some organisms, spores are formed in special structures. Under favorable conditions, they can develop into new organisms.

Example: Rhizopus

2.7 Vegetative Propagation

Formation of new plants from vegetative parts such as root, stem, or leaf in plants.

Examples

Methods of Artificial Vegetative Propagation

The male reproductive system includes reproductive organs and accessory glands.

5.1 Testes

The testes are the primary sex organs of the male.

Main Functions

  1. Production of sperms.
  2. Secretion of Testosterone.

The testes are located outside the body in the Scrotum.

Importance of Keeping Testes Outside the Body

A temperature slightly lower than the body's normal internal temperature is suitable for sperm production. The scrotum helps in temperature control.

6 Seminiferous Tubules by RAS A2Z

Inside the testis are coiled seminiferous tubules.

Spermatogenesis occurs here.

They contain:

Sertoli Cells

7 Leydig Cells by RAS A2Z

These cells are found in the interstitial tissue located between seminiferous tubules.

Their main function:

Production and secretion of Testosterone.

8 Male Accessory Glands by RAS A2Z

8.1 Seminal Vesicles

Their secretion forms an important part of semen and contains nutrients like fructose.

8.2 Prostate Gland

The secretion of the prostate contributes to sperm motility and providing a suitable medium for semen.

8.3 Bulbourethral/Cowper's Glands

Their secretion helps in lubrication of the urethra and reducing the effect of acidic residues.

9 Sperm by RAS A2Z

The sperm is a highly specialized male gamete.

Main Parts

1. Head

2. Middle Piece

3. Tail

10 Female Reproductive System by RAS A2Z

17 Oogenesis by RAS A2Z

The process of ovum formation is called oogenesis.

An important aspect of oogenesis in the human female is that early oogenesis begins in the embryonic stage itself, and many primary oocytes remain arrested in Prophase-I for a long time.

18 Comparison of Spermatogenesis and Oogenesis by RAS A2Z

19 Menstrual Cycle by RAS A2Z

Regular changes occur in the ovary and uterus during the menstrual cycle.

Four Major Phases

  1. Menstrual Phase
  2. Follicular Phase
  3. Ovulation
  4. Luteal Phase

19.1 Menstrual Phase

If fertilization and implantation do not occur, the levels of progesterone and estrogen fall and the endometrial lining breaks down and is expelled as bleeding.

19.2 Follicular Phase

Under the influence of FSH, ovarian follicles develop.

The developing follicle increases estrogen secretion.

Estrogen plays an important role in rebuilding the endometrium.

19.3 Ovulation

Around the middle of the cycle, due to the LH Surge, the ovum is released from the mature follicle.

19.4 Luteal Phase

After ovulation, the Corpus Luteum forms from the follicle.

It mainly secretes Progesterone.

Progesterone helps keep the endometrium suitable for pregnancy.

If fertilization does not occur, the Corpus Luteum degenerates and falling hormone levels trigger the next menstruation.

20 Fertilization by RAS A2Z

Fertilization occurs by the fusion of sperm and ovum.

Main Events

  1. The sperm reaches the ovum.
  2. Acrosomal reaction occurs.
  3. The sperm penetrates the outer layers of the ovum.
  4. The genetic material of the male and female nuclei combines.
  5. A diploid zygote is formed.
  6. A change reaction occurs in the ovum that generally prevents the entry of more than one sperm.

Result

Haploid sperm + Haploid ovum → Diploid zygote
