A.1 नदी से संबंधित मूल अवधारणाएँ

1. नदी (River)

प्राकृतिक रूप से एक निश्चित मार्ग में बहने वाली जलधारा, जो सामान्यतः ऊँचाई से निम्नभूमि की ओर बहती है।

2. नदी का उद्गम (Source)

जहाँ से नदी की मुख्य धारा प्रारंभ होती है। उद्गम हो सकता है: हिमनद, झील, झरना, पर्वतीय क्षेत्र, वर्षा, भूमिगत जल।

3. नदी का मुहाना (Mouth)

जहाँ नदी: समुद्र, महासागर, झील, दूसरी नदी में मिलती है।

4. नदी बेसिन (River Basin)

किसी नदी तथा उसकी सहायक नदियों द्वारा जल निकासी वाला पूरा क्षेत्र।

5. जलग्रहण क्षेत्र (Drainage Basin)

किसी नदी प्रणाली द्वारा जल निकासी किया जाने वाला क्षेत्र।

6. जल विभाजक (Watershed/Water Divide)

दो नदी बेसिनों को अलग करने वाली ऊँची भूमि। उदाहरण: पर्वत शृंखलाएँ कई बार महत्वपूर्ण जल विभाजक का कार्य करती हैं।

A.2 विश्व की प्रमुख नदियों को याद करने का सबसे अच्छा तरीका

नदियों को केवल लंबाई के आधार पर नहीं पढ़ना है। हम इन्हें इन समूहों में पढ़ेंगे:

अफ्रीका: नील, कांगो, नाइजर, जाम्बेजी, ऑरेज, लिम्पोपो

एशिया: यांगत्सी, पीली नदी, मेकांग, गंगा, ब्रह्मपुत्र, सिंधु, ओब, येनिसई, लीना, अमूर, टिगरिस, यूफेट्स

यूरोप: वोल्गा, डेन्यूब, राइन, डॉन, नीपर, नीपर

उत्तरी अमेरिका: मिसिसिपी–मिसौरी, मैकेंजी, युकोन, रियो ग्रांडे, कोलोराडो, सेंट लॉरेंस

दक्षिण अमेरिका: अमेजन, पराना, पराग्वे, उरुग्वे, ओरिनोको

ऑस्ट्रेलिया: मरे, डार्लिंग

A.3 विश्व की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण लंबी नदियाँ

महत्वपूर्ण सावधानी: नदी की लंबाई अलग-अलग स्रोतों में बदल सकती है, क्योंकि यह इस बात पर निर्भर करती है कि नदी का वास्तविक उद्गम किस सहायक धारा से माना गया है। इसलिए RPSC में दिए गए मानक/विकल्प के संदर्भ को देखना आवश्यक है।

महत्वपूर्ण Trap

"विश्व की सबसे लंबी नदी निश्चित रूप से नील है" — इसे बिना संदर्भ के absolute fact की तरह नहीं पढ़ना चाहिए, क्योंकि नील बनाम अमेजन की लंबाई पर स्रोतों/उद्गम-निर्धारण के आधार पर विवाद मिलता है। लेकिन पारंपरिक सामान्य भूगोल एवं अधिकांश प्रतियोगी परीक्षा स्रोतों में: नील → विश्व की सबसे लंबी नदी के रूप में पूछा जाता है।

A.4 नील नदी (Nile)

मूल तथ्य: नील नदी → अफ्रीका; यह उत्तर-पूर्वी अफ्रीका की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण नदी प्रणाली है।

प्रवाह: दक्षिण → उत्तर; अंततः भूमध्य सागर (Mediterranean Sea) में गिरती है।

नील की प्रमुख धाराएँ: श्वेत नील (White Nile) — महान झील क्षेत्र से संबंधित; नीली नील (Blue Nile) — इथियोपिया के उच्चभूमि क्षेत्र से निकलती है। दोनों का महत्वपूर्ण संगम: खार्तूम (सूडान) में होता है। इसके बाद संयुक्त धारा उत्तर की ओर बहती है।

नील और इथियोपियाई उच्चभूमि: नीली नील को इथियोपियाई उच्चभूमि से पर्याप्त जल प्राप्त होता है। इसी कारण मानसूनी/मौसमी वर्षा से संबंधित जल नील की बाढ़ प्रणाली में महत्वपूर्ण रहा है।

नील डेल्टा: नील नदी भूमध्य सागर में गिरने से पहले विशाल डेल्टा बनाती है। महत्वपूर्ण: Nile → Mediterranean Sea; Nile Delta → Egypt

नील से जुड़े प्रमुख देश: Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia — Blue Nile, Egypt। इसके अलावा Nile Basin Initiative से जुड़े अन्य देशों का भी व्यापक बेसिन संबंध है।

नील केवल मिस्र की नदी नहीं है। नील का बेसिन अनेक देशों में विस्तृत है।

A.5 अमेजन नदी

मूल तथ्य: अमेजन → दक्षिण अमेरिका; मुख्यतः पेरू, कोलंबिया, ब्राजील से संबंधित नदी प्रणाली। अंतिम निकास: अटलांटिक महासागर।

अमेजन बेसिन: अमेजन का जलग्रहण क्षेत्र विश्व के सबसे विशाल नदी बेसिनों में से है। यह विशाल Amazon Rainforest से जुड़ा है।

अमेजन की विशेषता: अमेजन विश्व की अत्यंत विशाल जल-प्रवाह वाली नदी, विशाल नदी बेसिन, विशाल उष्णकटिबंधीय वर्षावन प्रणाली से संबंधित है।

Important distinction: सबसे अधिक discharge (जल प्रवाह) वाली नदी → Amazon। यह प्रश्न बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि इसे "सबसे लंबी नदी" से भ्रमित किया जाता है।

A.6 यांगत्सी नदी

स्थान: चीन; महाद्वीप: एशिया

महत्व: यांगत्सी एशिया की सबसे लंबी नदी, चीन की सबसे लंबी नदी के रूप में अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है।

प्रवाह: पश्चिम → पूर्व; अंतिम निकास: पूर्वी चीन सागर (East China Sea)

यांगत्सी और Three Gorges: यांगत्सी पर स्थित Three Gorges Dam विश्व की सबसे प्रसिद्ध विशाल जलविद्युत परियोजनाओं में से है।

A.7 पीली नदी (Huang He)

देश: चीन

विशेषता: पीली नदी का नाम इसके जल में उपस्थित लोएस (Loess) से संबंधित महीन अवसादों के कारण पड़ा।

प्रवाह: पश्चिम/उत्तर-पश्चिमी चीन से पूर्व की ओर। मुहाना: बो हाई (Bohai Sea) क्षेत्र।

सबसे महत्वपूर्ण तथ्य: Huang He → Loess → Yellow colour

A.8 मेकांग नदी

महाद्वीप: एशिया

प्रमुख देश: चीन, म्यांमार, लाओस, थाईलैंड, कंबोडिया

अंतिम निकास: दक्षिण चीन सागर

महत्वपूर्ण: मेकांग दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया की प्रमुख अंतरराष्ट्रीय/सीमापार नदियों में है।

A.9 गंगा नदी

भारत से संबंधित होने के कारण इसे आगे भारत के नदियों वाले भाग में विस्तार से पढ़ेंगे। विश्व भूगोल के संदर्भ में अभी मुख्य तथ्य: गंगा → भारत + बांग्लादेश; और अंततः: बंगाल की खाड़ी।

A.10 ब्रह्मपुत्र

विश्व मानचित्र में: तिब्बत → भारत → बांग्लादेश की नदी प्रणाली के रूप में पढ़ें। तिब्बत में इसे यारलुंग त्सांगपो नाम से जाना जाता है।

A.11 सिंधु

मुख्यतः: तिब्बत/चीन क्षेत्र → भारत → पाकिस्तान → अरब सागर से संबंधित नदी प्रणाली। विश्व भूगोल में इसका महत्व: Indus → Arabian Sea

महाद्वीप: उत्तरी अमेरिका; देश: मुख्यतः USA

प्रमुख तथ्य: Mississippi नदी प्रणाली में Missouri एक प्रमुख सहायक नदी है।

मूल तथ्य: महाद्वीप: अफ्रीका; क्षेत्र: मध्य अफ्रीका; प्रमुख देश: कांगो लोकतांत्रिक गणराज्य (DRC), कांगो गणराज्य आदि; लंबाई: लगभग 4,700 km के आसपास; मुहाना: अटलांटिक महासागर

सबसे महत्वपूर्ण तथ्य: कांगो नदी → विश्व की सर्वाधिक जल-प्रवाह वाली नदियों में अमेजन के बाद प्रमुख। अफ्रीका में: Congo → सबसे अधिक जल-प्रवाह वाली प्रमुख नदी।

कांगो बेसिन: कांगो नदी का विशाल बेसिन भूमध्यरेखीय वर्षावन से जुड़ा है। इसी कारण: वर्षा अधिक, जलप्रवाह पर्याप्त, घना वर्षा वन, जैव-विविधता अत्यधिक।

विशेष भौगोलिक तथ्य: कांगो नदी भूमध्य रेखा को दो बार पार करने वाली प्रमुख नदी के रूप में प्रसिद्ध है।

प्रवाह की विशेषता: नाइजर नदी का मार्ग विशेष रूप से रोचक है। यह गिनी क्षेत्र से निकलकर पहले उत्तर-पूर्व की ओर माली की तरफ जाती है, फिर आंतरिक क्षेत्र में घूमती हुई दक्षिण-पूर्व की ओर बढ़ती है और नाइजीरिया से होकर गुजरती है।

मुहाना: गिनी की खाड़ी (Gulf of Guinea)

Niger Inland Delta: माली में नाइजर नदी का विस्तृत आंतरिक डेल्टा अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है।

A.1 Basic Concepts Related to Rivers

1. River

A naturally flowing stream of water along a definite course, generally flowing from higher to lower elevation.

2. Source of a River

Where the main course of the river begins. Source can be: Glacier, Lake, Waterfall, Mountainous region, Rainfall, Groundwater.

3. Mouth of a River

Where the river meets: Sea, Ocean, Lake, Another river.

4. River Basin

The entire area drained by a river and its tributaries.

Important Trap

"The world's longest river is definitely the Nile" — this should not be read as an absolute fact without reference, because there is controversy over the length of the Nile vs Amazon based on sources/source determination. But in traditional general geography and most competitive exam sources: Nile → World's longest river is asked as such.

A.4 Nile River

Basic Fact: Nile River → Africa; It is the most important river system of North-East Africa.

Flow: South → North; finally falls into the Mediterranean Sea.

Major Streams of the Nile: White Nile — related to the Great Lakes region; Blue Nile — originates from the Ethiopian Highlands. Important confluence of both: occurs at Khartoum (Sudan). After this, the combined stream flows northward.

Nile and Ethiopian Highlands: The Blue Nile receives substantial water from the Ethiopian Highlands. For this reason, water related to monsoon/seasonal rainfall has been important in the Nile's flood system.

Nile Delta: The Nile River forms a vast delta before falling into the Mediterranean Sea. Important: Nile → Mediterranean Sea; Nile Delta → Egypt

Major Countries Associated with the Nile: Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia — Blue Nile, Egypt. Besides this, other countries associated with the Nile Basin Initiative also have extensive basin connections.

The Nile is not only the river of Egypt. The Nile basin is spread across many countries.

A.5 Amazon River

Basic Fact: Amazon → South America; mainly related to Peru, Colombia, Brazil. Final exit: Atlantic Ocean.

Amazon Basin: The Amazon's drainage basin is among the world's largest river basins. It is connected to the vast Amazon Rainforest.

Features of the Amazon: The Amazon is related to the world's extremely vast water-flow river, vast river basin, vast tropical rainforest system.
